My Favorite Authors As a Child
I’m often asked, “who was your favorite author when you were in grade school?”
L. Frank Baum, Evelyn Nesbitt, and Lois Lenski, who wrote wonderful stories about children living in every geographic part of the United States. I eventually read every book in the Children’s Room at the Austin, Texas, Public Library, so the very nice librarian would call my mother to let her know whenever new books arrived. Yes, I had really thick glasses back then, and straight hair, so I looked a lot like Marcie, from the Charlie Brown comic strip. Every holiday my aunts and uncles teased me for keeping my nose in a book. But there were no cousins to play with yet. And sitting around with adults was so AWFUL BORING compared to the land of Oz.
The Narnia books by CS Lewis came out when I was busy in high school. I missed them totally, but later I got a chance to catch up when my own children discovered them.
